Ransomware Cyberattack Strikes Large US Dental Referral Firm
Many dental news outlets are reporting that the Qilin ransomware gang — a Russian-linked cybercriminal organization — claimed responsibility on June 28, 2026 for stealing personal information files from systems linked to 1-800-Dentist, a major dental patient referral and marketing platform. The group alleged it obtained data potentially affecting millions of patients and the dental practices connected to the service.
For dental practices that use third-party referral services or marketing platforms, this incident is a reminder that Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) must be in place for any vendor handling protected health information (PHI). A vendor breach may trigger your own HIPAA breach notification obligations, even if your practice systems were not directly compromised.
Now is a good time to confirm your BAAs are current, review your HIPAA Security Risk Analysis, and ensure your team knows your incident response procedures.

US HHS-OCR Settles Ransomware Investigation with Health Plan
On June 18, 2026, HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a $450,000 HIPAA settlement with Spencer Gifts LLC’s health plan following a November 2021 ransomware attack that breached the PHI of 10,023 individuals. The case is OCR’s 20th ransomware enforcement action and the 14th resolved under its Risk Analysis Initiative.
The primary violations cited: failure to conduct a Security Risk Analysis and failure to implement adequate HIPAA security policies. As part of the settlement, the plan entered a two-year corrective action plan covering risk analysis, policy revision, and workforce training.
OCR’s Risk Analysis Initiative has now resulted in 14 consecutive resolutions where a missing or inadequate risk analysis was the central violation. Dental practices must have a current, documented HIPAA Security Risk Analysis — this is the first thing OCR will look for if your practice is ever investigated after a breach.

ADA Health Policy Institute Launches New “HPI Perspectives” Series
The American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute (HPI) introduced a new publication series called HPI Perspectives — short, data-driven articles designed to make the HPI’s research on dental workforce trends and practice economics more accessible to dental professionals.
Topics covered in the series include dental workforce shortages, dental hygienist supply trends, student loan debt and federal loan cap impacts, and economic outlook data for dental practices. Survey Finds Most Americans Unaware of Oral-Systemic Link
A new survey of 2,052 Americans conducted by Procter & Gamble and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) found a striking knowledge gap: while 76% of Americans say they are motivated to take care of their oral health, only 3% associate it with whole-body health. Additionally, 44% of respondents had never heard of any connection between oral health and cardiovascular disease.
The good news: 80% of survey respondents said that understanding the oral-systemic connection would make preventive dental care feel more important. This data offers dental practices a clear opportunity — brief patient education about the links between gum disease and systemic conditions like heart disease and diabetes can meaningfully increase patient motivation for preventive care.

July 28 Is World Hepatitis Day
World Hepatitis Day, observed annually on July 28, was established by the WHO to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and advance its elimination as a public health threat. The date honors Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed the first HBV vaccine. More than 300 million people worldwide live with chronic hepatitis B or C, and viral hepatitis claims approximately 1 million lives per year.
For dental practices, World Hepatitis Day is a timely prompt to verify OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard compliance: confirm that hepatitis B vaccination has been offered to all occupationally exposed employees, that declination forms are on file for those who declined, and that your Exposure Control Plan and annual training records are current.
