October 10th is World Mental Health Day

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, and contribute to their community. To raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated October 10th as World Mental Health Day.

In dentistry, addressing mental health is not just about individual well-being but also about improving patient care and fostering a supportive workplace culture. A recent a cross-sectional survey study demonstrates the importance of mental health and well-being in dental settings. According to the study published in the October 2025 Journal of Dental Hygiene, more than half of dental hygienists report experiencing workplace bullying, defined as abusive behavior, including work sabotage and intimidation, that negatively affects a person’s well-being. Bullying not only increases workplace stress, but also makes the hygienists want to quit. These results highlight the need for initiatives focused on stress reduction to ensure the overall health and wellness of dental healthcare personnel.

Creating a positive work environment plays a significant role in team morale and well-being. Celebrating team achievements and recognizing individual contributions fosters a sense of value and appreciation. Promoting inclusivity and respect within the team builds trust and solidarity, while offering flexibility, such as adjustable work hours or additional breaks, helps accommodate the diverse needs of staff members. By implementing these strategies, dental practices can create an environment that supports both individual and collective well-being, leading to greater job satisfaction and improved patient care.
