CDC Issues Severe Flu Advisory – Infection Control

On February 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health advisory warning health practitioners and the public about increasing influenza activity across the nation. The most common flu strain circulating is H1N1, which caused the 2009 pandemic.

CDC is reporting severe influenza illness especially among high-risk patients. What is more alarming is that CDC has received reports of severe illness developing in young adults who are not immune-compromised. However most of these individuals had not been vaccinated.

Clinicians are advised to be on the lookout for severe cases, and to encourage all patients who have not received the flu vaccine to get vaccinated.
