Saturday, April 22, 2023 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The US Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA’s) semiannual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 22^nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The aim is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.

Unused prescription medications can be dropped at local collection sites. Note that sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, but can only accept pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. A list of permanent controlled substance drop boxes can be found here.

Last fall, individuals turned in nearly 647,000 pounds of prescription drugs at nearly 5,000 collection sites throughout the country. Since its inception 13 years ago, DEA’s National Prescription Take Back Day has removed almost 17 million pounds of unneeded medications from communities across the country.
