OSHA Requirements for Eyewash Stations

Federal OSHAUnder 29 CFR 1910.151(c), the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that “suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use” where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials. Plumbed or self-contained eyewash equipment must meet the requirements of ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 (R2020), Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment. Water hoses, sink faucets, or showers are not acceptable eyewash facilities. Eyewash stations must deliver a controlled flow of flushing fluid to both eyes simultaneously, providing tepid water.

Eyewash stations mounted on sinks are acceptable, provided they can be activated hands-free (using arms or other means) and remain flowing without requiring the use of hands. The water flow must meet a minimum rate of 0.4 gallons per minute (1.5 liters per minute) for eyewash stations, and the station must be free of barriers to ensure direct access. Additionally, the water temperature must be tepid, defined by ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 as between 60°F and 100°F, to prevent thermal injury. Measures must be taken to ensure that hot water cannot accidentally be delivered to the unit.

Regular maintenance of eyewash stations is required. Employers should consult the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidance on the frequency and duration of activating eyewash stations to reduce microbial contamination and ensure proper operation.
