CURES 1.0 System Being Decommissioned on March 4th
Last month, the California Department of Justice and the California Department of Consumer Affairs issued a joint notification to all affected parties that the CURES 1.0 system will no longer be available after Saturday, March 4, 2017. The old system allows access from all web browsers, risking access to confidential and sensitive patient records.
CURES 2.0, which has been operating since January 2016, meets the minimum security requirements and accounts for over 90% of patient activity report requests. Therefore, the decommissioning of CURES 1.0 is expected to affect a very small number of CURES users.
CURES, which stands for Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System, consists of an electronic database used to track the prescribing and dispensing of Schedule II, III and IV controlled substances to patients in California. It is designed to monitor this information for suspected abuse or diversion, and can provide a prescriber or pharmacist with critical information regarding a patient’s prescription history to help identify high-risk patients who might benefit from early interventions. California law requires all California licensed dentists to register for access to CURES 2.0 upon issuance of DEA registration.
