For Effective Surface Disinfection… Clean First and Then Disinfect!
Before surface disinfection can be effective, clinical surfaces MUST be cleaned of debris prior to disinfection. Surfaces cannot be adequately covered with disinfecting solution if dirt and debris remain on the surfaces because dirt and debris could actually deactivate the active disinfecting agent(s) as well as prevent the disinfect from coming in contact with the surfaces.
People assume disinfectants can be used as cleaners and vice versa. This is not true. Unless the disinfectant is labeled as a cleaner, then it cannot be used to clean first. Dental staff must always follow label and safety data sheet (SDS) instructions for proper use. After cleaning the surfaces with a cleaning solution, coat the surface with an EPA-approved chemical disinfectant for the recommended contact time, and then wipe dry if necessary. Consider using an EPA-registered product labeled for both cleaning and disinfecting, so long as both steps are performed separately. Dental healthcare personnel must follow a disinfectant’s label instructions for safety, efficacy and proper disinfecting methods.
