CA Dentists: Opioid Course Requirement Begins Jan 1, 2023 – New CE Requirement

Beginning January 1, 2023, dentists licensed in California will be required to complete a two-unit course approved by the Dental Board of California (DBC) on the responsibilities and requirements of prescribing and dispensing Schedule II opioids, every two years as a condition of license renewal. Updated in September 2022, Section 1016 of the California Dental Practice Act states that the new course must cover, at a minimum, the practices for pain management in dentistry, regulatory requirements for prescribers and dispensers, and dental office procedures for managing vulnerable or substance use disorder patients.

For our OSHA Review Subscribers… The January/February 2023 Training Document has been approved by the DBC to satisfy the continuing education requirement to take a two-unit DBC-approved course on the responsibilities and requirements of prescribing Schedule II opioids.
