ADA Updates Clinical Practice Guideline on Antibiotic Use
The American Dental Association (ADA) published an updated clinical practice guideline on antibiotic use for the urgent management of dental pain and intra-oral swelling. According to the guideline, “evidence suggests that antibiotics for the target conditions may provide negligible benefits and probably contribute to large harms.” Refer to the guideline for a detailed review of recommended practice.
Other ADA resources for clinicians seeking more information on antibiotic use and prescribing in dentistry include: 1) A Facebook Live “Ask the Expert” event on the topic on November 18 at 1:00 pm ET on the ADA Facebook page, and 2) a systematic review of antibiotic use in dentistry provided in the December issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association.
