Mental Health and Well-Being in Dentistry

Many studies have shown that dentists are among those healthcare providers particularly prone to burnout syndrome and mental health problems in their daily work. The American Dental Association (ADA) estimates that more than 80% of dentists report feeling significant stress in their career. Addressing mental health is not just about individual well-being but also about improving patient care and fostering a supportive workplace culture.

Resources for Mental Health and Well-Being

  • For more than 20 years, the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and wellbeing. To support the initiative, SAMHSA provides resources and information to support individuals and communities who may need mental health support.
  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has online resources for maintaining positive emotional well-being, both at work and at home.
  • For dental specific resources on mental health and well-being, refer to the American Dental Association’s Wellness Resources.

Creating a positive work environment, with open communication, plays a significant role in team morale and well-being. Practice owners or managers can lead by example by demonstrating a commitment to these values. Leadership is crucial in shaping a culture that prioritizes mental health and well-being.

For our OSHA Review subscribers… the March/April 2025 Training Document in Section X of your OSHA Review binder covers mental health and well-being in the dental profession.
